I've been intrigued with the idea of cashing in on a standard life at home to take the plunge of moving abroad ever since I was a young child and began to hear the stories of how my British uncle abandoned a proper English life and a career at Cambridge University, to homestead in the absolute middle of nowhere in Colombia. I continue to be intrigued by such stories, and was able to find a fun tribe of women who'd moved to far flung places when I contributed to the anthology Once Upon an Expat.
None of my moves abroad were due to me being a "trailing spouse." Looking back I realized I was always the driving force behind the moves (whether they were on my own or once during my marriage.) In appreciation of the particularities of being a woman moving abroad alone, I recently started a Facebook group called Women Who Have Moved Abroad Alone, where support, network, and make friends.
Here on this page I share stories of those who've made the plunge of moving to Italy. I love these stories because they're about following the heart, not the head.
