Hi Chandi! I love reading your posts and watching your videos! Is there any way you can assign dates to each of these videos so we can see the timeline? I think it’d be helpful to see that. Especially as an American trapped in my own country where so many seem to not be taking this virus seriously.
Chandi Wyant says
Hi,
It is great to hear that you like the videos and the posts. Yes, you know, someone else also mentioned to me today that dates would be helpful. It doesn’t work to get dates added to the actual videos but I can see about adding them in text above each one. Thanks for the feedback!

You’re doing beautifully, considering how frustrating it must be to have such wonderful people and beautiful art just on the other side of the door!
Where could someone buy your book from WA state that you’d get paid the fastest? Can’t let you run low on chocolate.
Aloha

Hi! What a sweet comment 🙂
My book is not in any bookstores in WA state, and those are probably closed anyway. So I would suggest Amazon. I will think of you next time I enjoy some organic dark chocolate!

These were great. Thanks for the insights. The last one of the center made me particularly sad. So eerie to see it all shuttered and devoid of people.
Stay Safe!

Welcome! Thanks for watching them!

Love seeing the progression and the ups and downs you and so many are going through as this goes on and on… I wish everyone here who is complaining could see your videos from Italy where the quarantine in place is sooo much more strict. You make us laugh and feel for your situation all at once. It also helps us see the way people can come together for the “greater good” if they see solidarity verses selfishness. Love the one where you are walking back and forth in front of the grocery carts! Hang in there and keep them coming as you go through the slow opening up process. Fingers crossed.
Chandi Wyant says
Hi,
Yes, definitely “ups and downs” are constant, and the “coronavirus fatigue” is frequent too.
Ha, glad I made you laugh!

Hi Chandi. After years of dreaming, my wife and I have decided to take the plunge and will be moving from Canada to Italy in June 2022!
I have very much enjoyed your informative posts and have a few questions! I realize it is all the way into 2022, but hopefully you are still active on the site and able to respond.
First, our story. We had a small apartment in Arpino (FR), which we sold around june 2020. we have our Codice fiscale. We have sold our house in Canada effective June 15/22. We are travelling to Arpino May 18th for 3 weeks, (which is the effective date of our Elective Residence Visas), so will be applying for the Permesso right away.
We have an “invitation to stay” form letter from Arpino friends, which provided an Italian address for our Visa applications, as we don’t have a residence yet. Unfortunately, we have decided to live in the Abruzzo region, so by the time we are able to apply for our residence certificate, we will likely be doing it in Abruzzo and have an Abruzzo address. Will that pose a challenge (differing from the permesso application address)?
You also talked about getting into the Italian healthcare system. I assume you did that in year one, or in January of 18. If that was the case, were you required to maintain your international insurance coverage, or was enrolling in Italy’s plan adequate for renewal of your permesso? Do you have to show that you have coverage (internationally purchased or Italy’s national plan) at the time of permesso renewal?
What did enrolling in Italy’s plan give you over your international insurance? Was the benefit simply the points you would get towards renewal of your permesso? We had to purchase a plan in order to apply for our Visas and it would be great to be able to cancel it.
On a different note, and this may not be within your experience. I wish to buy a car over there. Do you know if I am able to do that, with just A) International Driver License, B) ER Visa and C) cash?
Or do I have to wait for Permesso and/or residency cert, and/or Carta d’Identita?
I assume I have to get insurance, but does that have to be in place to present to the seller before buying the car? I am actually looking at a private sale from a friend in Arpino, so I imagine that complicates it even more and the aforementioned would be required, at the time I have to register the vehicle at the appropriate office.
Anyway, thanks again for your informative posts. Hoping to hear from you!

Chandi Wyant says
Hi John,
I’m glad my posts have been helpful. Regarding the car, I have not gone through the process of buying one in Italy but I am relatively sure that you must have the permesso and residency. Ask on the Americans in Italy Facebook group. This is the type of question that is perfect for that group.
If you get the permesso di soggiorno in Arpino, and then want to move the whole deal over to a different city/address, you would go to the Anagrafe in Arpino to notify them that you’re moving. You’d do paperwork with them, and then there’d be more do at an Anagrafe in the new town. That is what I recall, from when I moved from Lucca to Florence. But it sounds like you might be wanting to start off in the new town, with getting the permesso there. I am not sure if that can be done, if the initial visa paperwork is related to the Aprino address. But you could go to the Questura in the new town and ask. If it doesn’t work, you’d have to go to the Questura in Arpino to get the permesso and then start the process of changing the address, as I said, by starting at the anagrafe in Arpino, doing whatever paperwork they need, and likely more would need to be at the angrafe in the new town.
Your question about health care: maintain the international insurance coverage until you get residency. At the time of permesso renewal you have to show some kind of coverage. The international one, or if you’ve already gotten residency and gotten yourself into the Italian health care system, then show that.
The benefit of being in Italy’s plan is that you select a “medico di base” (Primary Care Physician) and this doctor will be useful in your life in Italy. Once registered with her/him, you are entitled to free consultations, referrals and prescription refills with this doctor. Your medico di base is the gatekeeper for specialist visits, so you would get a referral from her/him. There are many ways in which is it useful to be in the system and have a medico di base.
