See the Private Collection of Paintings Owned by the Grand Dukes
Explore the former home of the grand dukes of Tuscany on this two-hour tour of the Palatine Gallery in the impressive Pitti Palace
Here you will see the private collection of paintings owned by the grand dukes, displayed in what were their official staterooms which were frescoed by the Baroque artist Pietro da Cortona. Below these fabulously frescoed ceilings are masterpieces by Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Artemesia Gentileschi, Titian, Rubens, and more. The immense palace rooms with multiple levels of paintings hung on each wall, can be challenging to sort out, but I will guide you to the rooms with the not-to-miss masterpieces (and provide a “skip the lines” entrance.)
The best art here is from the 16th and 17th centuries (while the Uffizi holds more of the best art from the 15th century). Thus, on this tour I will help you understand the changes in art as we move from the Renaissance into Mannerism and Baroque. You will learn the importance of these paintings while visiting the most impressive of the Medici homes. At the end of the tour you can walk through the royal apartments on your own.
