How to get your Italian Carta d’Identità.

Do you know where and when to go to apply for residency after getting the permesso?
I was told conflicting things by various offices. But I got it sorted. And I’ve got the scoop for you.
In Post #3 I talked about going to the Anagrafe office (Vital Statistics Bureau) to apply for residency after getting my permesso. The woman in that office had told me that the Questura (Police Station) doesn’t know to tell foreigners that they must go to the Anagrafe after obtaining their permesso. She basically told me that the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. However she herself failed to tell me that I should apply for my Carta d’Identità after getting the residency certificate.
I figured it was something I got at the 5-year mark. (After renewing your permesso successfully for five years, you can then stop renewing it, and get permanent residency).
It turns out I could have applied for this identity card last September after getting my residency certificate, but no matter, once I found out about it from another immigrant, I went to the anagrafe with the appropriate documents and I was told I could come back on a date two weeks out to pick it up.
Documents you need to apply for your Carta d’Identità:
Passport
Permesso
Residency
Codice Fiscale
One photo with a white background
In sum:
Applying for the Carta d’Identità is easy. After you’ve done the residency step, take the above documents to your local anagrafe office, and if the town you live in is small you may be able to get the process going on the spot. In Lucca I did not need an appointment. I only had to take a number and wait a few minutes. If your city is large you may need to make an appointment.

The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing hahaha. Soooo true! Italian bureaucracy can sometimes be a nightmare! Congratulations on your Carta!
Thanks SardaMericana!
Hi thank you for this information! I just had a clarifying question. I have filed for residency, and the guy came by and checked that I do in fact live in my apartment. Check and check. But now I know I need the residency certificate to then go apply for my carta d’identita. Do you know if that is mailed to me? Or do I have to go pick it up in person?
Thank you,
Izzy
Hi Izzy,
What happened in my case is recounted here: http://paradiseofexiles.com/getting-italian-residency/
Hope it all goes smoothly for you!
Hello, once they have confirmed you live after 45 days you can log in to your comune website and book an appointment to get your CIE, then you just go to the ufficio anagrafe with your passport, the money and a passport photo, after which they will post you your carta d’identità, but it has to be signed for so if you can’t guarantee you will be home, request to pick it up from the comune instead!
Hi my kids and I received ours yesterday, the new electronic versions…we applied at our comune, and less than six days later they were delivered by Posteitaliane and needed to be signed for…
Simple procedure considering as mentioned “Italian bureacracy” lol…
The Permesso Di soggiorno on the other hand…..*eyeroll* drama after drama especially since my maiden name was changed after marriage..and so it was different on my kids birth certificates.
They didn’t believe I was the same person. This involved many, many trips back and forward to the Australian consulate in Milan and lots of €€€
Glad it’s all done now, it was worth it.
Ciao, thanks for sharing your story. What a bummer about your Permesso. I have heard it is a nightmare if one has changed one’s last name.
Hello, please I can go apply for my Carta d’Identità but my Permesso is on renew. Can I still apply?
Hi Stanley, to my knowledge you need your permesso in order to request the Carta d’identita.
Hiii I wanted to get carta d’identita…my owner provided me the contract but refuses to sign the recidence document for my Carata. Is there any other way that I can use the contract and apply for Carta. Thank you.
Hi, to my knowledge the only way to get residency is to have the registered contract and for your landlord to be OK with you using that address to get your residency. For more info on what documents you will need, go here.
What is d new law nw about d carta d identita,in Italy pls I want to knw d law as change December 2018
Hi, I am sorry but I don’t know anything about the law changing. If I learn about it, I’ll post it here.
Please I have requested for the carta di adentita but they said I should wait for one months but they didn’t give me any receipt
I applied for carta di denttita didn’t Cone controll fst 17 when was applied to for carta
Abdur, If you do not receive it after 45 days, go back to the anagrafe and ask for an update.
Hello I need to apply for Carta d’identità but I have no contract besides I have all other required documents. So please let me know that may I apply without contract.
Are you talking about a registered rental contract or a job contract? The registered rental contract is needed for the residency card. You cannot apply for the Carta d’identita without first having the residency card. Do you already have that?
Hey, I just have one question. Do I have to get a 3+2 years rental contract to get my residenza? Can a 6 months-1year contract work?
Hi Reddy,
A one-year contract will suffice in my experience.
I cannot apply for Carta d idendita,without international passport…
It is not clear what you are saying. There is no such thing as an international passport. Passports are country specific.
Carta di idendita, is two types.
1. Valid in Italy and EU
2. Valid in only Italy.
Do you mind if I quote a few of your articles as long as I
provide credit and sources back to your site? My blog site is
in the very same niche as yours and my users would really
benefit from some of the information you provide
here. Please let me know if this ok with you. Appreciate it!
Hi,
Thanks for asking, can you provide me the URL of your blog?
Hi there, Is it mandatory to get a 3+2 year rental agreement for the residency certificate. Can a 6 months-1 year regular contract be used to apply for reidenza?
Hi Reddy,
A one-year contract will suffice in my experience.
hello hello!
first of all thank you for your blog!
I am currently applying for the carta d’identita, but wanted to make sure, I dont need to print out my residency certificate right? i can only use the passport, tessera sanitaria, permesso, and the photos? right?
also I had no idea about the 5 year thing with the permesso! have you applied for the permanent permesso in this case? and if you have, what are the procedures?
thank youu sooo very much!
Hi,
I have not yet reached the 5-year mark.
You do need to show a valid residence permit when applying for the carta d’identita.
Documents needed are listed in my prior post.
