The Essence of Slow Travel: Two nights and a day on Italy’s Ancient Pilgrimage Route
Immerse yourself in the peace of quintessential Tuscan landscapes
When I walked the Via Francigena, I found the route from Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano to be one of the prettiest, and I am excited to offer a two-night excursion centered around this stretch of the route.
Since the Middle Ages the Tuscan town of Gambassi Terme has been a resting spot for pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena, and it’s also been associated with wellness due to the nearby regenerating saline waters. San Gimignano, a UNESCO World cultural heritage site, is a cornucopia of charm with its fabulous towers, pretty piazzas, and shops brimming with local products.
Friday: Our walking excursion will start in Gambassi Terme in the afternoon with a visit to a spa where we will indulge in pilgrim wellness, enjoying the pools and steam rooms with aromatherapy. A welcome dinner at traditional restaurant will round out your pleasant stay in Gambassi.
Saturday: We will rise early for our walk of approximately four hours to San Gimignano. We will pass through the Vernaccia vineyards, and pause at the Sanctuary of Pancole where you will hear the story of the miraculous Madonna fresco. The 13.7 km walk has an easy to moderate level of difficultly.
In the afternoon we will have a private wine tasting of Vernaccia, providing you with a chance to learn about the most important white wine made in Tuscany. Dining together that evening will close out a perfect Tuscan day.
Sunday: We will conclude our excursion by walking the 2 km perimeter of San Gimignano’s city walls that enclose the historic center.
This tour can be on other days of the week too.
